YWC concluded the agreement with Thu Duc Water BOO (TDW)*1, one of the water supply entities in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), aiming the carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction in HCMC. The project will be implemented not only to contribute the actual reduction in Vietnam but also to entitle Japan to achieve the reduction target in terms of carbon dioxide emission, utilizing subsidy scheme of “Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) *2 Model Project” *3of Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC) *4. This project is an expansion of the current CO2 reduction project in Danang, Vietnam which YWC has been undertaking since 2016.
Outline of the project
1.Project Name: Energy Saving by Introduction of Inverters for Raw Water Intake Pumps
2.Leader of Consortium: Yokohama Water Company (YWC)
3.Expected CO2 reduction: 1,043 ton/year by energy saving of 1,280,000 kWh/year (equivalent to 75,000 trees’ absorption of CO2) *5
4.Content: Inverters to be introduced to pumps at the raw water intake station operated by TDW enables to control the rotational speed of motors coping with the fluctuation of water volume and to bring about the energy saving which contributes CO2 YWC, as the leader of the consortium, will conduct the project management for 18 years until 2037.
*1 TDW: One of bulk water suppliers in HCMC producing approximately 20% of water consumed there and wholesaling to Saigon Water Corporation (SAWACO), the government organization responsible for domestic and business water services in HCMC.
*2 JCM: Japan’s facilitating diffusion of leading low carbon technologies, products, systems, services, and infrastructure as well as implementation of mitigation actions, and contributing to sustainable development of developing countries and appropriately evaluating them as contributions from Japan to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission reductions or removals in a quantitative manner, use them to achieve Japan’s emission reduction target.
*3 JCM Model Project: Financing programme under JCM scheme of Government of Japan (GOJ) which financially supports parts of the initial cost (up to half) on the premise of seeking to deliver at least half of the issued JCM credits to GOJ.
*4 GEC: A public organization under the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOE) authorized to provide subsidy to the qualified companies that provide contributions to GHG emission reductions under the JCM scheme
*575,000 trees’ absorption of CO2: calculated on the assumption that “one Japanese cedar absorbs 0.014 ton of CO2 annually” on the website of Forestry Agency
YWC contracted with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to carry out a survey on Septage Management for Facilitating the Environmental Development Project in the Philippines for Angeles City Water District and Calamba Water District.
YWC contracted Japan International Cooperation Agency’s (JICA) “Nigeria Federal Capital Territory Reduction of Non-Revenue Water Project” through joint venture with YACHIYO ENGENEERING CO., LTD.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is located in the central of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Federal Capital Territory Water Board (FCTWB) has developed water supply system based on water supply master plan prepared in 1980. Although new water supply facilities were recently constructed to meet increasing water demand by mass-migration and urbanization, non-revenue water (NRW) in FCT is estimated at 38%.
FCTWB in charge of operation and maintenance has not taken effective actions against NRW because of its shortage of experience, knowledge and qualified personnel on planning and execution of NRW reduction. Improvement in NRW is a key issue in water supply services.
Under the circumstance, the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (FRN) requested technical cooperation to the Government of Japan in order to strengthen NRW reduction capacity of FCTWB.
The term of the project will be three and half years from October 2014. YWC will support strengthening of NRW reduction capacity of FCTWB by sending expert team and inviting FCTWB staff for training in Japan with know-how and knowledge of Yokohama Waterworks Bureau.
